The author makes visits to the courthouse cafeteria, while awaiting the verdict of a man whose life is in his hands, and by means of flashbacks is attempting to understand how he got to where he is today. His reveries focus upon the problems facing a young lawyer in the 1960s from Lynns ethnic melting pot, affectionately known as the Brickyard, where the family chicken house was located, and who struggles to enter private practice as a solo practitioner.

The authors recollections are replete with humorous anecdotal stories involving earlier cases, lawyers, judges and Damon Runyan-type clients and characters from Lynn and surrounding communities.
